Final Project

OK. So in taking on this project I decided that I wanted to play with After FX and Photoshop's ability to create fake 3D space. Intitially my idea had been to combine atcual footage with 2D pictures that I created some form of 3D space with using Photoshop's vanishing point tool in filters. In the end, the footage did not look as attractive as the After FX techniques so I cut it.

This 30 second video took a lot of trial and error. i was not that familiar with the camera techiniques and really took on this project to test myself on it. Either that or I am a masochist who wanted to spend an hour trying to figure out how to get the camera to aim downward without losing the picture.

The idea behind it is that the camera is from a point of view of a fairy that gets led astray by a staircase that leads him through a room and a hallway that he escapes to eventually return to his fairy brethren. Enjoy!

Final Project Set-up

Proposal: For my final project I intend to create a sort of surreal world that is entered through a door in a hall. Because my actual artistic ability is severely lacking I intend to use a collection of photos that I will then arrange and use the After FX camera as well as 3D.

Assets:

Photography:
-Hallway
-Close-up on door
-Tree
-Lit Cigarette
-Lighter
-Music David Bowie

Footage:
-Person walking up stairs
-Person lighting a cigarette

Particles:
-Smoke
-Flames

Schedule:
Because of personal issues I have had to condense this to two weeks instead of three.

Week 1: I took the photographs as well as got most of the footage, although I plan to reshoot some of it in better lighting. Begin editing.

Week 2: Fine tune editing and perfect the particles.

Green Screen

OK. So I struggled to get this looking right. To start I started with this project, it didn't work right, so then I decided to use the footage from class. But then time constraints got to me. I panicked a bit and returned back to my original project, which since it is not done on HD makes me look very grainy. I evened it out a bit by adding noise to the background. In the end I got the keying done, but try to make certain that I didn't disappear. I did use a garbage matte for the yellow on shirt.

Assignment 3

OK. This project took me quite a bit of time, despite it's obvious simplicity. Cutting out the car was easy enough, but I had quite a bit of trouble getting the wheels to go forward, finding the anchor points, and I really just used this time to try to get accustomed to After Effects.

Introduction

I'm a senior at UT soon to graduate with a degree in RTF. Most of my classes up til this point have focused on writing and the theoretical side to film. With the ever-looming approach of May, I have attempted to use my final semester to get a grasp on the post-production side of film. Terrifying as I find this, I feel as though my fear of these post classes must be conquered in order to conquer my fear of entering the real world of film.

Last semester I took an internship that required the three interns in the program to work together on a media project for the Austin Zoo. My two peers were huge fans of editing and worked really hard to show me the ropes. By the end of the semester I certainly felt more confident in Avid, and I even got a couple introductions to After Effects.

I was introduced to this class by my roommate Jennifer. We have worked on a couple projects together, most of them involving her asking me what I think she should do, followed by me explaining things I think would work for the project, and ending with me saying, "Can you do that?" There is always a certain glow to her face when she says, "Of course." I suppose, in some way, I'd like to be able to take those ideas in my head and create them myself. And I am hoping this will help.

This is Jennifer's demo reel. I spent most of my winter vacation sitting on her bed throwing out ideas so that she could get it finished.

Other Stuff About Me

I am a huge fan of British comedy. Some of my favorite shows are Red Dwarf and the IT Crowd, but right now I am really into The Mighty Boosh.

I am getting involved with the improv community in Austin, and I am soon to start Level 4 in improv at the Hideout Theatre.

The Hideout

My current goal is to finish a zombie film so that I can enter it at Zombie Fest in October at the Alamo Drafthouse.
